Instant vs Storage vs Gas Geyser: Which Is Right for Your Home This Winter?

Instant vs Storage vs Gas Geyser illustration
Quick answer: Gas geysers need good ventilation and a clear flue because of carbon monoxide. Storage electric geysers give hot water on tap but heat slowly. Instant (tankless) heaters heat on demand but draw high current, so wiring must be checked first. Choose by gas pressure, number of bathrooms and your wiring capacity.

Low gas pressure, rising bills and carbon-monoxide worries have more homes rethinking their geyser. Here is how the three main types compare, and what each needs from your wiring and plumbing.

Why people are switching

ServiceTitan's 2026 plumbing trends report names tankless water heaters among the most sought-after smart fixtures, because they heat water only when you use it. In Pakistan the shift is also driven by something practical: gas pressure drops in winter, and a gas geyser that struggles to light is both annoying and unsafe.

Comparison of gas geyser, storage electric geyser and instant water heater
Three ways to heat water, three different sets of trade-offs.

Gas geyser

  • Pros: fast hot water when gas pressure is good; no electrical load.
  • Cons: pressure dependent; needs good ventilation and a clear flue.
  • Safety: poor ventilation or a badly burning flame can produce carbon monoxide. The US CDC describes it as "an odorless, colorless gas that kills without warning." Never install in a small sealed bathroom without proper venting, and have it checked regularly.
Warning signs: yellow or orange flame, soot, a strange smell, headaches or dizziness while using hot water. Switch off, get fresh air and have it checked before the next use.

Storage electric geyser

  • Pros: hot water on tap, steady temperature, no gas needed.
  • Cons: takes time to heat, loses some heat while on standby, and scale builds up in hard water.
  • Needs: earthing, a suitably rated circuit and breaker, a working thermostat and a safety valve.

Instant (tankless) electric heater

  • Pros: heats on demand, compact, no standby loss.
  • Cons: draws a high current while running, so wiring must be up to it. Flow rate can limit how many outlets it serves at once.
  • Needs: a dedicated circuit with correct cable and breaker, proper earthing, and sound plumbing connections.

Small point-of-use instant heaters (for a single basin or kitchen tap) are popular because they are easy to fit and heat only what you use.

How to choose

  1. Flats and rentals: a storage electric or a point-of-use instant heater avoids gas-line issues.
  2. Large families with several bathrooms: a properly sized storage geyser, or a gas unit with good ventilation and pressure.
  3. Solar homes: a storage geyser run during daytime on a timer uses your own solar units.

Whatever you choose: maintenance

  • Service before the first cold snap.
  • Flush or descale in hard-water areas.
  • Check joints and valves for leaks.
  • Insulate exposed hot-water pipes.
